Sam Woo BBQ (Alhambra): Irvine Branch Needs to Mimic This Place

514 Valley Blvd.
Alhambra, CA 91803

Let me just get it out of the way right now that this is the better of the two branches.  I know there are plenty of other Sam Woo restaurants out there, but this one truly kicks butt, so why bother trying the other branches out….okay I should when I get the chance since these two cook food in such different ways, I”m sure the other places aren’t following a set standard either haha.

Why is this place better? Well for one the food is actually warm when you order it from the express side.  However, the most important factor is that the food is just cooked better.  For starters, the orange chicken here is AMAZING.  I never thought that orange chicken could be complex in flavor…I mean it’s sweet and sour, right?  Well, Sam Woo showed me I was completely wrong… and in this case, I didn’t mind being wrong at all.  The orange chicken here is not only sweet and sour, but it has many, many other flavors in the mix.  They sautee the dish with odd looking orange peels hahahaha, ginger, chili peppers, and a slew of other things I can’t tell.  It really is a very unique tasting orange chicken…but still remaining similar enough that fans of the original orange chicken flavor would still love it.  It’s different enough for you to notice, but not different enough to make it a completely different dish.  A MUST TRY.

The next two dishes are fairly common in that my family always orders these.  First is the BBQ pork fried rice.  I always thought that this dish was cooked perfectly.  It’s not overly salty from soy sauce, and the taste is fairly mild, which goes well if you order side orders of bbq meat, etc.  The only gripe I have with this dish is the lack of BBQ pork that is actually in it.  It’s okay, just get an extra side order because this place probably serves the most tender BBQ pork in southern California, no lie.

The beef and bak choy sauteed noodles use to taste a lot better in the past, it tastes kind of sub par to me within the past several years, so I suggest just not ordering the dish.  It’s not bad, but eh, reserve your appetite for something else.

If you are in Alhambra, do make sure to give this place a go because it’s a local favorite for the people in the area and the 180 reviews on yelp should give you a reason enough to try it.  Enjoy!

  1. […] Not trying to hijack the thread, but are there also typical cantonese BBQ restaurants in Sac area? a la Sam Woo chain in SoCal, usually with roast pork/ roast duck/Squid hanging on their display? […]
